I've been on a lobster kick. I pine for it all time, but I can go months without eating it. And then suddenly I have to eat it! Lobster is cheap right now, luckily.
My sweet sister made lobster for dinner on Monday. She got it from Carey's Catch in Lexington, just up Mass. Ave. from the Arlington Trader Joe's. She served clam chowder, corn on the cob and steamed lobster. Yum. My husband mentioned this dinner at a rehearsal (he missed dinner for the rehearsal!) and folks said they'd love to go out for lobster. So we drove up to Gloucester last night to our favorite place - LOBSTA LAND! It's easy to find - you can see it from Rte 128. Get off at Exit 12 and go around to the left.
Lobsta Land sounds like a dive, a fish shack etc. but it is NOT. It is an amazing restaurant, with a real chef. Sure, they have fried shrimp and clam chowder. But they also have a HUGE menu with items like seafood risotto, scallops satay, Szechuan Peppercorn Crusted Ahi Tuna With Ponzu-Lime Vinaigrette, and amazing specials that combine elements of Italian, Asian and modern cooking with the freshest seafood around. It is definitely the kind of place where you should not make up your mind on what to order before looking at the specials.

We had a lovely table looking out over the marsh at sunset.
I got to taste lots of dishes last night:
Starters
Lobster chowder - a light, brothy concoction with potatoes and lots of lobster bits. Good, but not worth the $9.95 a bowl to me.
Coconut shrimp - standard flattened crisp shrimp with an outstanding ginger mustard dipping sauce, served with a cool Thai cucumber salad - $10.95
Diver scallops with wasabi cocktail sauce - the tiny scallops, nice breading, perky sauce, huge portion
Garden salad - lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sliced carrots..nothing special
Caesar salad - big slices of parmesan, otherwise standard...
There were also "steamers" on the table, but I didn't try any.
Entrees
Fried shrimp - incredibly fresh, perfectly cooked, huge portion of medium sized shrimp, great batter, came with fries and cole slaw - not sure on the market price, $19.95?
Seafood risotto - a smoky mixture of half a grilled lobster tail, grilled shrimp, and large sea scallops over creamy risotto with garlic, shallots, saffron, white wine, lobster broth, scallion and grated parmesan cheese $24.95
Swordfish special - 4 inch square piece over risotto with spicy lobster bits, taso ham, and tomatoes - $24.95
Lazy man's lobster - this was the winning dish - a simple casserole of lobster, breadcrumbs and butter. It was the meat of an entire lobster...huge pieces of claw and tail meat...just the right combo. It was the best tasting lobster I've ever had. It was pricey at $34.95, but seemed like a steal for the quality of the dish and not having to deal with shelling.
They have a full bar, if that's your thing.
The service was a little spotty, in that "wait staff overrun by unexpected crowd" way, but pleasant when we saw her.
This may have been one of the best meals I've eaten...great view, great food, great conversation...and LOBSTER!
