Combining two recent themes of comfort food and nostalgia, I have been thinking
of restaurants that have closed that I miss, and what I would order to eat if I
could go back in time. Here are mine - share yours!

1) El Greco, near Lechmere in Cambridge

They had the most delicious avegolemeno soup, and
gyros on puffy homemade pita, served with a friendly
smile by Jimmy or Mama at a counter with police and lawyers
from the nearby courthouse.

2) Gallagher's, P.O. Square, Congress Street in Boston

They had incredible sauteed soft shell crab in a remolade
sauce, in an elegant room that used to be the bank vault,
tuxedoed waiters and soft lighting.

3) New Korea, Inman Square in Cambridge

It was run by "GI Joe" and his Korean wife and their children.
They had the most incredible beef Bool Go Ki and Chicken
Kang Fung Ki. They were very kind to people who had
never eaten Korean and needed help to get started.

4) Jake & Earl's Dixie Barbecue, Inman Square in Cambridge

The sign is still there, but the food is long gone. They had
the closest thing to vinegary Eastern NC pulled pork
barbecue I've ever had outside NC. Cheap, fast and good.

5) The European, on Hanover St. in Boston's North End

The quintessential Italian place. Fabulous gnocchi with
cheese and sauce, served in a bustling dining room in
a booth with tourists and sports fan rushing to eat before the
game. Loved the maitre d' with the frilly tux shirts, and
the little old Italian waiters who called you honey and
brought extra rolls.
