Letting go

I don't like this time of year at work. Because my student workers are leaving. They are graduating. The brilliant, funny, sweet young people who I have enjoyed getting to know and working with, are moving away to California.

Most of them I will never hear from again. I won't ever know if they got that job, or married that guy or wrote that screenplay. They mean to write, but people just aren't good at keeping in touch.

And I want to know. I am the one who keeps in touch and stays interested and even, heaven forbid, looks up people when I travel! Yeah, sure, I may know that they are alive and read their cryptic posts on Facebook. But I want to know more.

It always reminds me of the last episode of "M*A*S*H" when those rag-tag medicos who had been so close knew that it was over. And there was nothing to be done about it. It's all part of being a grown up and letting go. But I don't like it. *sniff*
