Dave's Fresh Pasta, Somerville, MA

I am newly enamored of Dave's Fresh Pasta on Holland Ave. in Davis Square.

Ok, I know it's been there a long time, and even been expanded for awhile but I finally made my way over there last week. Usually when places change these days, they get rid of everything I used to buy. But Dave's has gone in the opposite direction. It's as if their buyer went out of the way to get items that I can not resist. The new incarnation reminds me a lot of the Wine & Cheese Cask, mixed with the best selection of prepared foods and deli sandwiches I've seen in a long time. The new offerings are so good, I didn't end up getting any pasta or sauce!

I went a little nuts, and spent almost $50. It's not cheap and I can't treat myself like that very often, but every bite was delicious.

Just to give you an idea of the selection, here's what jumped into my shopping basket:

Prepared foods case - jambalaya with sausage and shrimp, flank steak slices, cold sesame noodle salad, Asian peapod salad with mushrooms and miso dressing
Olives marinated in garlic and oil
Brownie cake with some amazing white frosting from a bakery in Maine
Red Velvet cupcakes
Caramelized pecans from Spain

I was waited on by Dave himself, and I managed to summon the courage to thank him for supporting Theatre@First all this time. He said he loves to do it. I can definitely recommend the place for a pre-theater nosh.

N. was astonished at my purchases, and asked if I'd gotten all the items that tempted me. I figure there was at least another $50 or more of stuff I wanted that I didn't get! And I also wanted to see if the prepared foods stay the same or vary. So we had to go back a few days later.

They had most of the same prepared food, with the addition of a wonderful beef stew and lentil salad. N. picked up some French salami, and I had their jambalaya again, and the cheesecake. I also tried one of the real sugar sodas...somebody's grape. I don't drink soda very much anymore, but this was so smooth and delicious!

When my bank balance recovers, I hope to go back again soon and actually buy some fresh pasta! And sauce. Maybe some cheese...or that European style yogurt...well..you'd better get over there before I buy it all up!
