Escaping to NH
Aug. 6th, 2010 10:18 amWe made it to NH yesterday!
After a wild week with my Dad in the hospital, one of my assistants at work leaving, another coming in, a wake for someone I didn't know but lots of people around me loved, and various other mind-spinning events, we managed to get our condo tidy enough for the blessed cat sitter to have a path to the kitchen, pack a few things and head North. We gassed up the car on Rte 1 then zoomed up I-95. The weather was gross...80's, wicked humidity, and it started to rain as we hit the border.
We made it to the condo on Lake Winnipesaukee

(my sisters rented it for my parents to get away, but that is not happening *sigh*) in just over 2 hours. It is an amazing townhouse tucked in the woods on the lakefront - modern, quiet, and huge! My delightful niece gave us a tour, showing us how the fans worked and showing off her "tree house" loft on the third floor. Then she gave us a tour of the pool and lakefront. She is the smartest tour guide!
We headed off around the lake to Meredith for lunch at Hart's Turkey Farm.

Yes indeed, you can get turkey with your turkey and some turkey on the side! Oh, and decorative turkey plates on the walls. I got to taste turkey chili, turkey tempura, and had a "small plate" of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and butternut squash! There was also a bowl of onion soup and some conch fritters. It was all good in that completely bland Americana old style cooking way. They have a fun little gift shop at the entrance. Alice got a turkey lollipop, which is thankfully candy shaped like a turkey and not some meat thing. Alice and her driver took off South and we headed out to explore.
We stopped in at Kellerhaus, http://www.kellerhaus.com/ an incredible ice cream buffet shop, with a gift store and a candy store in different rooms of the lovely old home. I managed to avoid temptation except for a few chocolates. I found a fun plastic boat full of old time candies that N. loved. He spent most of the time I was in there talking to his dad in Indiana and reminiscing about their trip up here many years ago.
We drove around the lake but couldn't see much due to the weather. We headed back to the condo and relaxed a bit, caught up on email from a lovely open wifi connection, which Tom Boddett says stands for "wireless fi...something" in the Motel 6 commercials but is "AWESOME" to us. I had fun surfing restaurant web sites looking for dinner ideas.
Both of my sisters called with news along the lines of "Just got home after WAY LONGER THAN USUSAL" on the road due to "HORRIBLE WEATHER" and "TERRIBLE TRAFFIC." Heh. One was hit by disasters along the Pike and Storrow, the other by I-93 shenanigans. I felt very lucky to have made it up I-95 without incident.
We opted for "close and cheap with lobster" for supper and headed off to Patrick's, a pub place nearby. http://www.patrickspub.com/menu.htm The weather had cooled off and cleared! We could see the lake at last in all its glory. We waited about 10 minutes while browsing the Yankee Candle store next door, then were seated at a quiet table in the dining room. We shared a lovely garden salad and shrimp cocktail...the hot day made cool food most appealing. They brought hot sourdough roles with chive butter, quite a treat! N. had the sirloin tips while I feasted on the lazy man's lobster special, which was only $20! It was nothing like the incredible version I tasted last week at Lobsta Land, but a nice, small casserole of lobster meat and breadcrumbs with just enough butter. My dinner came with dessert, but I could not eat it. So we packed up the sticky toffee pudding.
I spent a few minutes talking to my mom while sitting in the parking lot, since my mobile phone doesn't work in the condo. I got an update on my dad - she said he was much better today! He's back in rehab and on the road to getting stronger. Hallelujah!
We saw the stars as we got out of the car!
We had a quiet evening, watched the premiere of the new BBC series "Sherlock." It was quite good in that "swirl all around you and land in an unexpected place" way that great mysteries work. N. has read all the stories and pointed out the spots where they were weaving in elements of the original and where they were updating or veering off into modern territory.
I was toast so N. very kindly hauled my stuff upstairs and helped me sort out where to put the fans and figure out where to collapse. I don't know how he had the energy to go back down and handle a pile of PMRP business, but he did. With auditions starting this weekend, there's lots to do.

Date: 2010-08-06 02:37 pm (UTC)I had the lazyman's lobster when we went to Patrick's--too much green pepper, but once that was gone, it was yummy and great for the price.
