The Red House, Cambridge
Sep. 24th, 2008 10:35 pmTo celebrate having survived the beginning of the semester, a senior staffer in my office took the entire main office staff out for lunch! She accepted my suggestion - one of my favorites in Harvard Square - for The Red House. It's at 98 Winthrop Street, an almost-alley small street. It is actually an old house built about 1802. My family has been going there for years for birthdays and holidays. It's owned by the same guy that owns Charlie's around the corner and used to own Gianninio's in the Charles Hotel.
I made a reservation using opentable.com. They have great restaurant info, make it quick and easy to book, and let you accumulate points for future dining.
The Red House has a web site with their new autumn menu. Not sure how to describe the food...modern American? A slight tinge of Italian? http://www.theredhouse.com/theredhouse.htm
It is a very classy, upscale place but comfortable, not snooty. We had the corner table in back dining room. There were a couple of other parties when we arrived, but then no one but us for the last 90 minutes or so. The service is slow...it took us two hours to have lunch. But we weren't in a hurry, thankfully.
We started with a free basket of breads and olive oil. Nothing special. I drank iced tea. My co-workers tried the Shipyard Pumpkin beer on tap, and a New Zealand white wine.
I had a wonderful starter of smoked duck breast salad - a large portion of mixed greens with a raspberry-hazelnut vinaigrette and thinly sliced duck. Then the divine lobster risotto with spinach, taleggio and white truffle oil. It is the stuff that food dreams are made of.
I got to taste four desserts - key lime pie, mango mousse pie, flourless chocolate torte and a berry cake. The mango mousse was my fave - so light and tasty.
It's the perfect place for a business lunch or a special personal meal. Quiet, classy room, and great food!
