We finally had a chance to try Supreme Kitchen in Somerville today. I'd been reading about it all summer on LJ, while its regulars moaned because a car had crashed through the front door and closed it for months during the repairs. The lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] kalibex was in town to help out at the theater, so we headed out for Sunday brunch with her.

We tried to get in at Highland Kitchen at 11:45 am, but they had a 20 minute wait and our guest had a train to catch, so we moved on up Highland Avenue. It's a small spot, just across the street from Somerville Hospital. You can park in the hospital lot for free on Saturdays and Sundays, but there's usually street parking, too.

It's a small, low-key place, seats about 20 people. They don't take credit cards, and don't have a web site that I can find. They're open 7 am - 3 pm every day. There are a dozen reviews on Yelp at http://www.yelp.com/biz/supreme-kitchen-somerville (but none since they re-opened a couple of weeks ago, and many seem to talk about the prior ownership). They definitely got rid of the U2 shrine decor in the renovations, brought in colorful modern art and sunny paint. There's even a flat screen TV above the coffee station.

They seated three of us at a table for two. Not my idea of fun, but I was so hungry, I didn't care.

You're welcome to help yourself to coffee (they have that rack with 6 hot carafes with various flavors) or cold drinks from the cooler. Moving around is not easy...very cramped place. The cold drinks are boring...the usual Tropicana OJ, sodas etc.

Their breakfast menu is huge, and they have a specials board with seasonable names - today it was Pilgrim, Plymouth, Indian, Squanto etc. for Thanksgiving. There was even an eggs benedict variation with turkey, stuffing and cranberry Hollandaise!

There are eggs, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast wraps, breakfast burrito, omelettes, french toast and pancakes...very hard to choose. Instead of having eggs benedict, they have SIX different variations, from the classic to Southweastern (chili, salsa and jalapeno Hollandaise).

The food is delicious. Perfectly cooked, plentiful, inventive combinations. N. tried their steak and eggs. It was a large steak, possibly the thickest, juiciest breakfast steak I've ever seen, with three eggs (overkill), a corn muffin, toast and hash browns. They didn't have any steak sauce. B. had their Mexican eggs benedict with sausage, salsa and jalapeno Hollandaise. I tried the Irish eggs benedict with corned beef hash in the place of the usual Canadian bacon. All the dishes come with home fries...very boring, not even crisp.

The waitresses were very nice, but the food took forever to come, like 30 minutes. Odd for such a small place.

The prices are low with almost everything under $10 - breakfast sandwich for $3.25, 2 eggs with toast, potatoes and meat for $6.95, the benedicts are $8.95, omelettes from $5.25 to $7.95, steak & eggs $9.95.

The bill for three (drinks, three meals) was less than $35. Wow.

So on the down side - crowded, no credit cards, drink situation, slow, no steak sauce.
On the plus side - easy parking, creative tasty food, nice people.

It had its pluses and minuses, but I'd be glad to go again before making up my mind, maybe on a Saturday when it would be less crowded. For now, I'd go back to Singbella on Mass Ave. instead, as they are very similar but you have much more space and can charge it at Singabella.
