Westminster wittering

My head is full of dogs! Might be because I spent most of 6 hours over the last two evenings watching doggies on TV! Time for the annual canine adoration society that is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show from Madison Square Garden in NYC. I am a dedicated cat person, but I love to pop in once a year and see what's up with AKC set.
I was happy with the "Best in Show" winner, a stodgy Sussex spaniel named Stump - a 10 year old dog! I would have been happy with any of the dogs except the standard poodle, whose topiary cut offends me. And it was sired from frozen sperm from a dog that died twenty years ago. I'm all for IVF, but that seems a bit extreme. Then again, I'm not up on all the breeding protocol of pooches.
The Scottish Deerhound called Tiger (after Tiger Woods) was fun, if you like dogs the size of small cars. Everyone was talking up Lincoln, the tiny little Brussels Griffon, but the pug face...eh. So many black dogs! Four of the seven finalists were black dogs - the Scotty, the Standard Poodle, the Giant Schnauzer and the Puli (they called it a Rasta dog - black dreds!)
I fell in love with a gorgeous white Borzoi sight hound on Monday night. They're Russian...like the Afghan hound...so elegant. And the Pekingese with the leg kick and twirl made me smile.
I am so happy that it doesn't matter what the handlers look like! They run the gamut of age, men, women, body types and sizes, and style points.
There were a couple of new breeds - the Plott, another hound, and Spinone Italiano, a hunting dog.
The Boston Globe has a good slide show at http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/pets/gallery/0209_westminsterdog/
or you can go whole dog and watch breed judging videos or whatever at http://westminsterkennelclub.org/
and fill your head with doggies, too!

Date: 2009-02-11 05:44 pm (UTC)I do! In fact, some day when I have a real house with a real yard, a Scottish Deerhound is one of the dogs I'm considering getting.
I love the picture of the Samoyed getting brushed. That is one happy dog. I'll have to search for a picture of Tiger.
