It may sound wacky, but I had a grand time at auditions last night for "Never After." I was afraid I'd feel like death warmed over, having only one day off between the one-acts and this, but I was energized by it. It was so cool to have all the planning finally start paying off.

It's an event where Theatre@First really shines...with the experienced house crew putting our mission into practice by making the experience as low stress as possible, with great snacks, and people chatting and supporting each other. It was so great to see the familiar faces again, and to meet new folks.

And it was fabulous to hear people sing! I had no idea that so many of the fine actors I've been watching for years can sing beautifully as well! What voices! And several can sing and vamp like no tomorrow. I love Broadway tunes, and wanted every singer to keep going. It nearly killed me to hear the early part of tunes like "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" without hearing the chorus! But we only asked for 1 minute. It was interesting to watch the music director at work. I haven't been around a chorus since college. Thanks to the auditioners, I have almost two dozen music viruses in my head today!

There was a theater magic moment when one singer spaced on the lyrics, as can happen to anyone, and another person they didn't know got right up to loan a songbook! And the singer went on to do a fine audition.

And the look on the composer's face when the first group formed a chorus and she heard her work performed for the first time by others...priceless.

And we get to do it all again tonight! Whee!

I had fun at the audition (although, admittedly, as soon as I'd finished my own audition I started viewing all the other candidates through the lens of "if I could music-direct anything I want and was casting this person, what would I make them do?")

*hatches evil plots for fun and profit*

Nothing comes to mind. This was a much warmer and friendlier environment than we usually manage to create for the MIT G&S auditions. :)
