Attributed to Mark Twain by Rev. Judy Brain...

The quote appeares to actually from Mrs. Robert Taft in a discussion about statistics:
I always find that statistics are hard to swallow and impossible to digest. The only one I can ever remember is that if all the people who go to sleep in church were laid end to end they would be a lot more comfortable. ~Mrs. Robert A. Taft

Although I think the joke itself is an old irish one and goes back to way before Mark Twain.

But it does make me giggle and remember the Dorothy Parker turn on it..."
"And there was that wholesale libel on a Yale prom. If all the girls attending it were laid end to end, Mrs. Parker said, she wouldn't be at all surprised."
Dorothy Parker (1893-1967), U.S. humorous writer. Quoted in While Rome Burns, "Our Mrs. Parker," Alexander Woollcott (1934).
