Spun, Powder House Square, Somerville

I was waiting for take-out from East Asia, the wonderful Chinese/Thai place in Powder House Square, and wandering down Broadway when I noticed that Spun (pronounced Spoon, I think) the new frozen yogurt shop, is open. I went in to check it out. It's very mod and trendy, with bright paint and big black leather couch and wifi!
The deal is that they have "original flavor" and another flavor every day. Today the other flavor was banana. The very nice counter guy offered me a free sample of either flavor. I picked the original, to see what the basic is about. As others have mentioned, it is frozen yogurt. As in, it tastes like yogurt that's been frozen. Unlike most other places where the frozen yogurt tastes like thin ice cream. This was like yogurt poured from a soft-serve machine. The texture is wonderful...very smooth.
I decided to get a small cup, and add in fresh raspberries and chocolate bits. They have a full array of nuts, fruits, candies and cereals you can add. The small cup was quite big. It costs $2.75, then each topping is $1. That ends up being almost $5, which seems like a lot to me but I think is in line with most frozen treat places.
I usually don't eat ice cream, as the sugar and the fat often don't agree with me, but I had no ill effects from this...actually felt rather healthy somehow with the fruit and the clean, smooth taste of the yogurt.
There was no one in there at 6 pm, so I asked if they're doing okay. The guy said it's quiet in the afternoons, but they've had a steady stream of folks at night. They're open late - 11 pm!
I don't think I'll pine for it, but it is a nice addition to that strip and worth a stop now and then for a treat.
