I had a fun time watching the Country Music Awards on Wednesday night. I am not a big fan of country music, but it has its moments, and it was interesting to see who's who in Nashville and what they were wearing on the red carpet.
It was less formal than the Oscars, and a bit more than the Golden Globes, but had a good spirit of parading the current stars, honoring the long time contributors, and shining a bright light on the newcomers.
The Boston Globe had a small slideshow of the red carpet hightlights and characters

The Country women have gone over to couture, parading the red carpet in flowing gown and jewels. Taylor Swift's gown was amazing! It was a rate combination of a great dress that looked good on the person wearing it. Her hair, make-up...everything right on and age appropriate. LeAnn Rimes looked like the Bride of Frankenstein, with a white dress and dark eye make-up and shoes. And the men...well...they haven't gotten it yet. Someone needs to tell them that your pasture boots are not right for a big night out. And definitely not denim overalls!
The hosts, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, were fun. He looked handsome in his trademark white cowboy hat, and she wore 14 different dresses. She had to change at every commercial break, yes? He pulled out his guitar and they sang a great little song for their opening:
Mama, don't let your babies grow up to Kanye
Let 'em pick guitars and drive 'em ol' trucks
Cowboys have manners,
They don't interrupt
I was surprised that I knew most of the musicians. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill did the power couple thing in the front row, with Keith Urban and Nichole Kidman further along. Martina McBride sang, and Reba McIntyre, too. The Judds presented an award and remarked on this being their 25th attendance at the awards. Vince Gill sang with Daughtry and Barbara Mandrell was honored for something.
Hootie (late of the Blowfish) won best new artist as Darius Rucker and sang a fun number.
Carrie Underwood put on her fifteenth outfit (silver sequined hot pants) and did a "Cabaret" number complete with a bevy of lingerie-clad dancers a la Madonna or Brittany.
Brooks and Dunn, who are breaking up after 20 years, sang their last duet with the ZZ Top front man with the long beard.
Dale Earnhart Jr. was there, NASCAR don't you know, and he must be a good driver because he sure can't read a teleprompter.
Sugarland won best vocal duo. And a group I hadn't heard of, Lady Antebellum, sang "I Run To You" in a fake snowstorm and won best vocal group. George Strait sang about "Twang" and was the only act I could say, "Well, yes, that sounds like country music."
But the night belonged to Taylor Swift, the 19 year-old phenom (who was dissed by Kanye West at the MTV awards and then returned to the stage by Beyonce), won four awards, performed twice, and seemed like a genuinely nice person in her speeches that no one interrupted.
