My May Day

Happy May Day! Mine was a "this and that" sort of day, full of sunshine, a new park, new tech, family, road trips, horses, subs and Doctor Who! And a great relief that my city has its own water system.

SUN! It was a gorgeous day - sunny, 70's, a little breeze...ah, lovely.

A PARK! I started the day off with a stroll around Danehy Park in North Cambridge. It is bizarre to walk through a little gate off a busy street, and have this HUGE park splay out before yours eyes! There's 55 acres of park back there - a Tot Lot, a water park, three softball fields and a baseball field, a track oval...and lots of green open space.

DVR at last! We turned in our ancient cable box for one with a DVR. Finally, I get to join the 21st century of time-shifting, commercial-skipping, time-saving TV watchers. Tech savvy husband set it up for me, and within an hour we had asked it to save the Kentucky Derby coverage and all showings of "Jeopardy!" Heh.

LUNCH - I dropped hubby off to record some radio drama thing, and headed out to see my parents. I thought Mom was going to make me lunch - she's been on a "keep your dad alive by starving him to death" diet and therefore anti-restaurant. Instead, she decided we should go out for a drive. We went out through Lexington to Bedford to the D'Angelo's sub shop. Because...wait for it...they had COUPON! I had a "Thanksgiving sub" of turkey and trimmings. Not bad.

DESSERT - I called my sister to ask where the closest roadside ice cream stand was. Thank you E. and Google! It turns out there was one of the best ones around just a few miles up the same road we were on. So we headed out to Bedford Farms to get in line with the throngs for a treat. Ice cream is my dad's favorite thing, so I love seeing his face with a dish of soft-serve in front of it.

A CEMETERY - my folks love a good cemetery, so we detoured into the Shawsheen Cemetery, a lovely hillside with big trees and lots of marble.

I took the folks home and worked with them on their computer. Apparently, one area of my dad's brain that has gone is the "how to use the computer" part. So I got to wade through Dad's google mail and their favorite web sites with them.

I started listening to the radio news and heard that a major water pipe, like, the one that brings water to all the cities and towns in Eastern Mass, had broken and was spewing 8 million gallons of water an hour into the Charles River! They said a "BOIL WATER!" order was in effect east of Weston.

SUPPER - I picked up Hubby and some subs for dinner from Cristo's in Davis Square. Yes, that's two meals in a row with subs. We'd already planned our supper before my mom sprung lunch on me. Cheap, fast and good. I had an Italian sub this time.

WATER - Oh, and hubby explained that every place EXCEPT CAMBRIDGE which has it's own water system, was effected by the bad water problem. So everyone around us, including the City of Boston, is supposed to boil their water to avoid e. coli, and we don't have to worry about it. Amazing!

DVR! And I watched my first program recorded on my very own DVR! I zooped through three hours of coverage of hats, horses, sloppy tracks, cook-offs and mint juleps in about 2 hours! Wheee! I honed in on a horse called "Super Saver" early on...not sure why. And he won! Calvin Borel is an astonishing jockey. I have that tickle in the back of my neck that tells me this is the year for a Triple Crown winner!

DW - we finished up the night with a viewing of the most excellent British Sci-Fi TV show, "Doctor Who." Nothing like some 11th Doctor in peril to perk up the senses. Heh.
