Ode to Academia

When I leave the office today, there is a stretch of 16 days in which I only have to work 1 day. WOOT!

Between my boss, who lets us split up covering the office next week, and the holidays, and Harvard's "Winter recess" between Christmas and New Year's, I get 15 days off without having to take a vacation day. The prospect of this respite is bliss. I should make grand plans, but I haven't. I am looking forward to not working, and having the time to do things I only do when I've had the 4th or 5th day off in a row...a very rare thing.

I love academia. I am so lucky!

Me too. Yay! Working for a college is awesome.

You know what is LESS awesome than academia? Working for a half-government, half-academic institution where your co-workers on the academic side of things get that Winter Recess off and gloat about it to you, the government employee, who has to take annual leave to not come into work those days!

However, I am grateful that I have a job and the associated annual leave that comes with it, so I am not actually complaining. I'm just sayin'.

Just 1 1/2 days left of 2009 school! (But then 13 straight weeks with no days off barring weekends. If the seniors don't kill us, we'll probably kill them. Heh.)

There are definitely strong reasons to put up with the rest of the crap that comes with working in academia. Of course the crap varies by institution, state (lots o crap in CA right now), union, and job position.

Still, I don't really want to go anywhere else.
