Driving day

I drove through five states today! We woke up in CT, grabbed a quick breakfast and gassed up the mini-van (note to self - DO NOT BUY GAS IN CT! Freakin' $2.99 a gallon!) and headed South. I drove through NY, NJ, DE and finally made it to our destination in Maryland 6.5 hours later. Read more... )
A good day all around.

We're on our way to the snow belt...I mean, Maryland. Heh. Hubby's "Doctor Who" buddies are in from Australia, so the gang is gathering at their parents' home once again.

We started off with a short drive Thursday afternoon, to take some of the load off the long haul, going down to our favorite Courtyard by Marriott in Waterbury, CT. They put us on the 9th floor this time, overlooking the hillsides on the I-84 side.

We had a very special dinner at N's favorite place for special occasions - Diorio Restaurant. http://www.diorios.com/.

So it's off down the highway all day today. More from below the Mason-Dixon line later!

The theater folks have been posting rave reviews about Eat at Jumbo's, the new hole-in-the-wall pizza place where Urban Gourmet used to be in Ball Square. They placed an ad in the Dracula program, and they have an elephant in their logo, so I had to try it. I made my third visit tonight, so it must be time to write about the place.

I've been for lunch, gotten take-out for dinner, and now eaten there for dinner. You can order online on their web site, or through Foodler. They have free wifi while you're eating. There are five tables and some stools at the window in case you want to watch the goings-on on Broadway.

http://www.eatatjumbos.com/

Their menu is HUGE. I had a hard time deciding. They have the most varied menu I've ever seen in a place like this. There's pizza, calzones, salads, sandwiches with fun names, panini, pasta dinners, burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, a big assortment of sides from garlic knots to potato salad to fried green beans, and wings with 31 different sauce choices! They even make PB&J or Fluffernutter sandwiches. And you can have fried dough, or Ben & Jerry's for dessert. Whee!

I tried the poutine - a Canadian favorite of French fries, melted cheese and roast beef gravy. Yum. It is delicious! It's not an exotic dish, as one might think, but a comfort food. Yum. I don't usually order burgers out, but I indulged in the Hollywood burger - bacon, avocado and cheese. Double-yum. They give you chips and a pickle in a basket with the burger. Hubby tried their "Beefini" panini - roast beef, grilled onions and cheese on ciabatta bread. He was impressed.

So - cheap, fast, and good with a gazillion choices and poutine that you can't get anywhere else, and willing to support the arts in Somerville? I'd say this is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

We had a grand trip to IKEA in Stoughton yesterday. It's rare that I get to IKEA, so the trips tend to turn into grand adventures both in planning and execution. I didn't get to my first IKEA until 5 years ago on a summer trip to Toronto. About six months after that, we popped in to the one in New Haven on our way back from seeing a Broadway play in NYC. And finally, the one in Stoughton opened...I've now been there three times.

We sailed down the Expressway in record time...I love that road in the middle of a clear day. N. tried out his smart phone talking GPS directions app for the first time with me in the car...I kept wondering why this weird voice was distracting me from my driving...oops.

My main objective was to eat Swedish meatballs. Mission accomplished! They have a $4.99 special with 10 meatballs, mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. I had a side of meatballs, too. For $1 you get 5 more...heh. Oh, and the hazelnut torte. It was divine!

We wandered around the cavernous showrooms marveling at the selection, the fun Swedish names for things, and low prices...N. got a new bookcase and drawers to further the organizing effort he's working hard to do. I hugged the wonderful plush stuffed animals, but left them to go home with someone else.

We checked out, then picked up some Swedish food to take home (yes, more meatballs) from the bistro and headed back up the Expressway, inching along to remind me why I hate this road any time between 3-7 pm.

Every time I go, I wonder why I don't go more often. I am so looking forward to having one in Somerville...

We had a great brunch in Arlington today at the Arlington Diner on Mass Ave. not too far from Rte. 16. It's not fancy, but sometimes you just need food and they have it. Cheap, fast and good. Eggs, pancakes, waffles, toast...you know. It's about 25% cheaper than our usual haunts in Cambridge and Somerville.

So this is definitely on my list of places to go when I am out that way.

We regularly order dinner delivered from City Slicker Cafe through Foodler.com, but had never eaten at the restaurant. We ended up there last night. They definitely rate high on my "cheap, fast and good" scale. It's comfort food.

http://www.cityslickercafe.com/

They used to be Urban Gourmet in Ball Square, but had a fire and ended up down on Somerville Ave. halfway between Porter and Union Square. It's a pizza place, but seems more like a diner. They've done a lot of little things to make it more stylish - matching paint and ceramic napkins trays that coordinate with the menu colors.

It's all good but dessert was the best part - a RED VELVET CUPCAKE! It comes with a nonpareil on top, and a chocolaty center. 10 seconds in the microwave made it the most divine dessert I've had in a long time...for $2.75!

We took our guests to the classic Jewish deli for brunch on Saturday morning, the S&S in Cambridge.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/s-and-s-restaurant-deli-cambridge

We've taken them there before, and this is one of the places they always ask to visit again. I forget how dependable and delicious this neighborhood place can be. It was interesting to go there right after having tried The Friendly Toast, as this place is different in most ways.

We had a quiet table in the middle of the three dining rooms, and I was comforted by their wood grains and uncluttered decor. They aren't as crowded on Saturdays as they are on Sundays, and we got there before 10 am, so we got a table right away.

I had another virgin Bloody Mary...this one was too bland. I start to feel like Goldilocks. I need to remember where the one is that's just right..hmmm...I think that was Highland Kitchen. Their orange juice is fresh-squeezed and delicious.

There are lots of choices. I had the eggs benedict again...their Hollandaise is perfect. The food is wonderful - they give you a fruit cup on every plate. We shared their pumpkin panckakes. Without raisins, they weren't as exciting as the ones at the Friendly Toast, but the spicing was great and they were fluffier. Friends tried the pesto omelette, petite filet mignon & eggs, and the potato pancakes.

The prices are a little more than The Friendly Toast, but you get more and I found it tastier. The service was attentive.

I need to remember this place is there and go more often!

We finally made it to breakfast at the Friendly Toast last Friday morning.
http://www.thefriendlytoast.net/

We had guests flying in early, so it seemed like the perfect time to try out the new spot, a diner in the complex at 1 Kendall. We've tried to get in twice before on weekends, but the wait was over an hour! Not doing that...

It was very quiet at 9 am. The kitschy decor is fun. We had the table with the book covers all around and a huge Mr. Mexican hamburger on a pedestal.

I tried their virgin Bloody Mary, which was way too spicy. I can eat a lot of spice, but this was way over the line. The orange juice was delicious - lots of pulp and fresh tasting.

It was hard to choose what to eat...so many interesting and strange combinations! I went with the eggs benedict to test a standard, and it was fine. We got their pumpkin pancakes with raisinettes to share...they were fabulous! Our vegetarian friend was impressed with her choices, and the guys enjoyed their omelettes. The prices are reasonable.

The service was friendly but spacey...we were left alone for long stretches, and finally had to take our check to the front to pay.

With the long waits on the weekends, we probably won't go very often, but they're open late and I definitely want to try their non-breakfast options. If I can figure out the down times, it seems like a great option close to home.

We had our anniversary dinner at Tupelo, the new Southern style restaurant in Inman Square.
http://www.tupelo02139.com/

I had been pining to try it ever since it was a rumor when Magnolia's closed over a year ago. It's one of three new Southern places to open in the past year or so, with Highland Kitchen and Hungry Mother.

It got a glowing review in the Boston Globe.."Yum." And almost 100 reviews on Yelp.

It was great to have a quiet meal with my sweet husband.

It was all good, but I came away feeling underwhelmed. I can't explain why it is getting glowing reviews. Nothing came across as special to me. I wouldn't mind going back, but I'm not going to pine for it.

We were pleased to see the big "Grand Opening" banner and discover that the replacement for Mifune has opened in Arlington Center. It's called Fusion Taste, and has basically the same menu of Chinese, Japanese and sushi. They've added a full bar, but otherwise it is the same. You can order delivery through Foodler. They said they've been open two weeks.

The Hunter sisters turned into "ladies who lunch" and took my mother out for her birthday today. We motored out into the Autumn countryside to Concord, the picturesque Colonial town of Revolutionary War fame. We had lunch at the historic Colonial Inn (founded in 1716!) then toured the Presidential China exhibit at the Concord Museum.

I took my parents to Rockport yesterday, that beautiful post card New England coastal town on the North Shore. The weather was perfect - sunny, breezy, low 70's. It called out "go to the ocean!"

It is hard not to wonder each time we go if this will be the last time with Dad. But we've been wondering that since his heart troubles in 1996, so who knows? But it means whenever there's a perfect day, we don't waste it...we go to the ocean!

I was waiting for take-out from East Asia, the wonderful Chinese/Thai place in Powder House Square, and wandering down Broadway when I noticed that Spun (pronounced Spoon, I think) the new frozen yogurt shop, is open. I went in to check it out. It's very mod and trendy, with bright paint and big black leather couch and wifi!

The deal is that they have "original flavor" and another flavor every day. Today the other flavor was banana. The very nice counter guy offered me a free sample of either flavor. I picked the original, to see what the basic is about. As others have mentioned, it is frozen yogurt. As in, it tastes like yogurt that's been frozen. Unlike most other places where the frozen yogurt tastes like thin ice cream. This was like yogurt poured from a soft-serve machine. The texture is wonderful...very smooth.

I don't think I'll pine for it, but it is a nice addition to that strip and worth a stop now and then for a treat.

Believe it or not, I didn't go out to a fancy restaurant for dinner with a bunch of people tonight, and I don't have a glowing review!

N. was busy, so I consulted my list of "places N. would rather not eat" and chose Boston Market in Wellington Circle. I wanted to try their new "crispy country chicken."

You know when you watch TV, and there are commercials for restaurants that aren't around here, and it drives you slightly nuts? I'm not a big believer in chain restaurants, but I have a weak spot for Olive Garden. About once a year, I can't stand it anymore and I search out the closest Olive Garden and make a pilgrimage. I had thought the closest one was in Leominster, which is about an hour West of here. Well, when I went out to Framingham on Wednesday for the book reading, I found out that there's an Olive Garden at Shopper's World. Half an hour from here.

http://www.olivegarden.com/menus/dinner/

So tonight I talked N. and a couple of friends into indulging my urge for Italian chain food, and drove out to Framingham in the mist.

I got taken out to dinner again last night! What a week....

N. arranged dinner with a couple of friends at Helmand, the Afghan restaurant on 1st Street, down the block from the Cambridgeside Galleria Mall. I adore it there, but hadn't been in a long time. It's such a pleasant room...yellow stucco walls, big brick fired oven in the wall...very classy. The food is like a cross between Greek and Indian food...lots of spices but not spicy, if you know what I mean. They have great photos of the place and the food on their web site. http://www.helmandrestaurantcambridge.com/

Be sure to make reservations. You can usually do it the same day, but do it. It fills up every night.

In March 2024 I got talking with Neil about my 50th birthday in 2009 and couldn't recall what I did. I dug up old emails to create a record of the amazing festivities! I had lots of birthday celebrating.

  • My uber-generous little sister got us 4th row seats to see a Cirque du Soleil show in Boston Aug. 29 and took me out for a tasty Chinese dinner.

  • Saturday Neil took me away overnight to our favorite hotel in Waterbury CT to soak in their whirlpool and eat a fabulous dinner.  We headed out Saturday morning and drove down to Bridgeport, CT to see where our pal Becky D  hangs her hat these days. She has a gorgeous, brandy-new apartment downtown in an area that is resurrecting itself. We worshiped her kitty, then she took us to lunch at El Idolo, an Ecuadoran place. We had plantains and cheese, then I tried their "shrimp casserole" which was not that at all, but lots of shrimp in a lovely orange sauce, sort of like butternut squash bisque, over rice. Yum.  We drove around Bridgeport, saw the lovely waterfront along the Sound and the University of Bridgeport and the new minor league baseball stadium
  • We headed north to Waterbury, just 30 minutes up Rte 8, to the marvelous Courtyard by Marriott. They'd been sold out when I looked online and called Friday, so I'd made a reservation across the street, but when I walked in, they had a room!  We had a relaxing soak in their huge whirlpool then enjoyed some "Mythbusters" on the LG LED flat screen TV. Heh, Then came the higlight of the weekend - an elegant dinner at Diorio's Restaurant. http://www.diorios.com/. We made a reservation for the quiet dining room that is separate from the big bar area with booths. We started with the hot antipasto - samples of shrimp scampi, crab cakes, eggplant rollatini and fried mozzarella. The lobster bisque followed...a revelation. It was water-based instead of creamy, and had a ton of shredded lobster meat, so you got it in every bite. N. had the NY strip steak au poivre - a huge rectangle 2 inches high, with garlic mashed potatoes and sliced zucchini. This is the steak he dreams about - the marinade is incredible! I ordered the special twin lobster tails, taken from the shell then settled back on it for effect, stuffed with lump crab meat, pistachio and bread crumbs, accompanied by the same sides. Each bite was divine. We shared a slice of banofeee pie for dessert - a light, heavenly mixture of chocolate crust, toffee cream, bananas, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Our waitress was fun - a nifty young woman who wants to be an actress, Jennifer. We took over two hours to eat, so I was pleasantly full rather than overstuffed.
  • Sunday was another beautiful day! We had the hot breakfast buffet in the hotel lobby. They put out an amazing spread of fruit, scrambled eggs, hash, home fries, sausage, bacon, french toast, make-your-waffles, muffins, breads, coffee cake, cereals, yogurt...yum. We packed up and headed east.
  • We stopped in Vernon, CT at the quintessential NY-style deli, Rein's. http://vernon.reinsdeli.com/ordereze/default.aspx We got a variety of goodies to bring home - Reuben sandwich, half sour pickles, sour cream coffee cake, spicy beef chili, herring in cream sauce, Dr. Brown's sodas, and pecan pie.
  • Monday my parents took me out for a nice lunch at Jimmy's Steer House - I had baked stuffed schrod and rice pilaf with spinach.  I had a ghiradelli brownie sundae...yum.
  • Tuesday the students at the Bok Center were wonderful to me!  James brought me cookies from Burdick's, another student gave me a tiara, and a third brought cupcakes from Sweet, a new bakery in Harvard Square
  • I spent my actual birthday with Alice.  Alice sang to me and gave me a big hug. We shared a bologna sandwich and watched TV.  Her mom reported, "She made her first pun yesterday!  She asked her mom what was for dinner, and E said "Beef stew.  Do you like beef stew?"  And she replied, "I stew!  I stew!"  Bad pun, but great to know that she is good enough at language to play with it.  She knew exactly what she'd done, made an impy little face."
  • Wednesday I took myself to the Barnes & Noble book store in Framingham for a book reading by my favorite blogger, Jon Katz.  He brought his dog, Izzy, and talked about his new book about whether dogs have souls.
  • Thursday we had dinner at Helmand with Judy Yen and Renee Johnson.  Their kaddo caused Renee to say it was the best thing she ever put in her mouth!
  • For a final flourish, we took two other theater folks out to Framingham to the Olive Garden I'd discovered on my trip out there earlier in the week.  I had a sausage festival of sausage soup, their pasta bowl with a sausage tomato sauce over oriechette with sausage on the side!  Heh
  • I got lots of Facebook shout-outs.  Heh.

I am a lucky woman.

I went back through my restaurant posts and realized that I've never blogged about one of my favorite local spots. Or if did, I didn't tag it. So here goes!

I've been away! Overnight! Hadn't done that since last September....

N. and I saw a rare day in the schedule when we didn't have anything going on, so he convinced me that a get-away was in order. After several false starts (favorite hotel on the Cape booked, restaurant there closed, boil water orders in effect in Gloucester) we chose a return to one of our favorite places - Waterbury, CT. We haven't been there in five years.

You can tell with the first bite that they have a "serious chef" who thinks about every ingredient and how they taste together. And it makes me want to eat every bite, and go back soon for more.
